After initially launching the option on iOS back in March, Twitter is now bringing its darker ‘Lights Out’ dark mode option to Android.

Twitter initially released its darker screen option after criticism that its basic dark mode was still too light – you can see a comparison between it and other dark mode options here.

The even darker ‘Lights Out’ option addresses this. As you can see in the screenshot below, now, within your Twitter settings, when you switch on Dark Mode, you’ll also see a second toggle for ‘Lights Out’ as well.

And aside from giving your app a new look, ‘Lights Out’ mode also has health benefits.

A key benefit of dark mode options in apps is that they limit the use of blue light, which is designed to improve readability in the day, but can cause your brain to stop producing melatonin at night. This means that using your mobile device in normal mode at night can potentially disrupt your sleep cycle, making it harder to fall and stay asleep. Because Twitter’s Lights Out option uses a pure black color palette, it emits even less light than its dark mode, improving the benefits in this respect.

The new Lights Out option is being rolled out to Android users from today.
